Quick start
Build the Rust workspace, complete local setup, and bring the Karnelian daemon online.
Prerequisites
- Rust 1.75 or newer with Cargo
- PostgreSQL 16 with pgvector
- Node.js 20 or newer for the model gateway
- Ollama for local-first inference; hosted providers are optional
Build and initialize
The interactive initializer detects hardware, prepares Docker and the database, and writes local configuration. For CI and headless hosts, use `carnelian init --non-interactive`; interrupted setup can resume with `carnelian init --resume`.
git clone https://github.com/kordspace/karnelian.git
cd karnelian
cargo build --release
carnelian initManual data setup
Manual setup is available when the initializer is not appropriate. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`, set the database URL, and keep credentials outside source control.
createdb carnelian
psql -d carnelian -c 'CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS vector;'
sqlx database setupLocal model setup
Ollama is the default local-first provider. Hosted providers and MAGIC credentials are optional and can be added after the core runtime is healthy.

Start the daemon, confirm its health, then follow the event log before enabling autonomous work. Platform-specific guidance is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows in the repository docs.
